Korean American from Alaska wins Miss America

0

“I never could have imagined in a million years that I would be Miss America, let alone that I would be Miss Alaska,” a beaming Emma Broyles told The Associated Press on Friday in a Zoom call from Connecticut, where she won the competition about 12 hours earlier.

The newly crowned Miss America has made history, becoming both the first Korean American and the first Alaskan to hold the title in the competition’s 100-year history.

“And then they said Alaska, and I said, ‘No way. Are you sure? Do you want to check that card again?’ ” she said before the emotion overtook her and she began crying tears of joy.

“I could not believe it,” Broyles said. “I am so, so grateful to everybody back at home who’s been supporting me for so long, and I’m so glad that I’m able to bring home the title of Miss America to the state of Alaska for the first time in history.”

The very first Miss America program began in 1921 as a beauty pageant in Atlantic City, New Jersey. However, Broyles is only the 94th Miss America.

Broyles, 20, said her grandparents immigrated from Korea to Anchorage about 50 years ago, before her mother was born.

“Although my mom is full Korean, she was born and raised right in Anchorage, Alaska,” Broyles said.

Monkeys has been captured after they killed 250 dogs in “revenge” attacks

Two monkeys have been captured by authorities in India after they killed around 250 dogs in “revenge” attacks following the death of a baby monkey.

Radhakishan Sonawane, from Lavool village, told the website the attacks had been happening for three months, with the two monkeys taking away puppies and placing them on roofs or other places high up.

The monkeys were transported to a forest near Nagpur where they were released. Images released by ANI show the monkeys caged after being captured.

Officials with the forest department from the Beed district of Maharashtra state said the monkeys were trapped on Sunday and released in their natural habitat. “Two monkeys involved in the killing of many puppies have been captured by a Nagpur Forest Department team in Beed,” Sachin Kand, Beed forest officer, told India‘s ANI news agency.

Some monkey species are known to practice revenge, either directly or indirectly. In 2017, researchers published a study that looked at the social interactions of macaques. They analyzed 500 hours of video, including 15,000 episodes of aggression. They found monkeys tracked their associates’ behavior and would carry out revenge.

Range Forest Officer Amol Munde said he was aware of three to four cases of puppies dying after being taken by two monkeys in Lavool. He said he was not aware of dogs killing a baby monkey in the village, so does not believe the deaths were retaliatory in nature. “They take care of puppies. They used to keep puppies on roofs or tall trees,” he told News18.

Sen. Ossoff Urges President Biden to Swiftly Nominate a U.S. Ambassador to the Republic of Korea

Washington, D.C.  Following a historic five-day economic delegation to Korea last month, Georgia U.S. Senator Jon Ossoff is urging President Biden to swiftly nominate an Ambassador to the Republic of Korea (ROK).

The move underscores Sen. Ossoff’s deep commitment to strengthening relations and the long-standing partnership between the two nations.

“The U.S.-ROK alliance is strong, and it is vital to international peace and security. In my view, it is urgent that we have in place a Senate-confirmed ambassador to represent the United States, implement U.S. foreign policy from our embassy in Seoul, and strengthen our relationship with the ROK,” Sen. Ossoff wrote.

In November, Sen. Ossoff led a historic economic delegation to South Korea, where he met with key economic and government leaders to pitch additional foreign direct investment in Georgia to boost economic growth and create Georgia jobs.

Georgia is a major destination for South Korean Foreign Direct Investment, including major employers in strategic industries such as batteries, renewable energy, and cars, employing thousands of Georgians and representing billions of dollars of investment in the United States.

Peloton pulls ad featuring Chris following allegations of sexual assault

0

“Every single sexual assault accusation must be taken seriously. We were unaware of these allegations when we featured Chris Noth in our response to HBO’s reboot. As we seek to learn more, we have stopped promoting this video and archived related social posts,” a company spokesperson said.

Peloton has pulled its new ad featuring Sex and the City star Chris Noth following allegations of sexual assault against the actor in an article published by The Hollywood Reporter on Thursday.

The article describes the accusations by two women, who chose to be identified by pseudonyms, that Noth sexually assaulted them in separate incidents — one in 2004 and another in 2015.

In a statement to the publication, the actor denied he assaulted the women.

“The accusations against me made by individuals I met years, even decades, ago are categorically false. These stories could’ve been from 30 years ago or 30 days ago — no always means no — that is a line I did not cross,” Noth said in a statement to The Hollywood Reporter.

“The encounters were consensual. It’s difficult not to question the timing of these stories coming out. I don’t know for certain why they are surfacing now, but I do know this: I did not assault these women,” he added.

As of Thursday, Peloton’s tweet with the Noth ad was taken down.

In a statement to NPR, Peloton said it was “not aware” of the allegations against Noth when it released the ad.

The exercise equipment company created the commercial promoting the Peloton bike following the pilot episode of And Just Like That, the Sex and the City reboot.

In the first episode of the new series, Noth’s character — Mr. Big — dies of a heart attack after taking a 45-minute Peloton class. The company quickly created a version of the ad that featured a very much alive Noth, ready for another ride on the bike.

Rivian is planning $5B Georgia manufacturing facility, to bring 7,500 jobs

0

The electric vehicle startup has had a year of milestones. It went public in November and delivered its first consumer vehicles, a pickup truck and SUV, according to Rivian’s third quarter earnings report. Amazon, a major investor in the company, ordered 100,000 of Rivian’s electric delivery vans. Atlanta’s Cox Automotive is also a Rivian investor

Electric vehicle manufacturer Rivian Automotive Inc. (Nasdaq: RIVN) is planning a facility east of Atlanta that Gov. Brian Kemp calls the largest economic development project in the state’s history.

The $5 billion manufacturing facility is set to bring 7,500 jobs, according to the state’s Dec. 16 announcement.

Once the facility is built out, it will be able to produce 400,000 vehicles per year. Construction is set to start summer 2022 and be completed 2024, according to the company.

Stanton Springs, a massive industrial park in Newton County along Interstate 20, scored Rivian. The facility will span about 2,000 acres, said Jerry Silvio, chairman of the joint development authority of Jasper, Morgan, Newton and Walton Counties, which owns the park.

The manufacturing facility adds to Georgia’s growing electric vehicle supply chain. Building out the EV supply chain puts the state on the forefront of a high-growth industry and opens an array of economic development opportunities for the state and the region, Kemp said.

Rivian’s announcement puts a cherry on top of the massive amounts of growth Newton and its surrounding counties have enjoyed in the past few years. Facebook has two major data centers in the same complex where Rivian will be. A massive, mixed-use project in Covington aims to rival the success of Alpharetta’s Avalon, and the city’s film and tourism industry is growing

Rivian Chief People Officer Helen Russell pointed to the local talent pool as a major factor in choosing Georgia. The plant will include “on the line” roles as well as technical and customers care positions with competitive wages, Russell said. It will mimic Rivian’s existing plant in Illinois.

South Korea-based company SK Innovation acted as a beacon for more EV supply chain companies with the 2018 announcement of two battery plants northeast of Atlanta. The company plans to employ 2,600 people by the end of 2023. Commercial production for the first facility could start as early as the beginning of next year. South Korea-based Duckyang announced its first U.S. manufacturing facility for electric mobility parts in the same county, shortly after SK Innovation settled legal disputes that initially delayed the project. https://f5de0f2233c9f066074b9e1700b79ec8.safeframe.googlesyndication.com/safeframe/1-0-38/html/container.html

Two other EV manufacturing facilities are on the way: a TEKLAS facility in Gordon County;= and a GEDIA Automotive Group facility in Whitfield County. Apple may also be planning to make its first autonomous, electric “Apple Car” at Kia Motors Corp.’s massive assembly plant in West Point.

North Korea executed 7 people for watching, selling K-pop videos

0

Kim had dubbed the southern cultural imports a “vicious cancer” corrupting the “attire, hairstyles, speeches, behaviors” of young people in North Korea.

North Korea has reportedly executed at least seven people in the past decade for watching or selling K-pop videos.

The disturbing revelation was documented in a new report from a South Korea-based human rights group that was reviewed by Fox News.

Titled “Mapping Killings Under Kim Jong Un,” the lengthy report by the Transitional Justice Working Group uncovered at least seven executions in the Hermit Kingdom dating back to 2012 connected to the indulgence of K-pop.

The executions were reportedly sometimes done in public as a warning to others — and relatives of those put to death were often forced to witness the deadly punishments.

The alleged executions under Kim’s reign were mapped out with the help of 638 defectors who cooperated with the report’s authors.

Last June, it was reported that Kim launched a secretive anti-K-pop campaign to impose harsher penalties on citizens caught listening to the popular genre of music from South Korea.

Hong Kong is set for first legislative election since Beijing’s new electoral rules

0

An analyst who spoke to CNBC predicted less interest in the polls this time, because those electoral changes have “narrowed” the choices for voters. The amendments that were introduced as part of the electoral overhaul mean there will be fewer directly elected representatives, and more Beijing-approved officials.

Kurt Tong, partner at The Asia Group, expects voter turnout at the polls to be “rather low.”

“Really the choices are quite narrowed for voters, and as a result, I would expect the voter turnout to be rather low,” he told CNBC’s “Squawk Box Asia” on Friday.

“The character of the election has changed significantly from five years ago where there was really a sense that the legislative council election could have a major impact on the direction of the governance of the city. And that just doesn’t seem to be the case now,” Tong added.

Under the new electoral system, the total number of seats in the legislative has been increased from 70 to 90. But the number of directly elected representatives has shrunk.

Previously, half the Council’s representatives were directly elected by regular Hong Kongers. Under the new rules, about a fifth of them will be.

An Election Committee that previously held only limited powers will now hand-pick almost half the Council’s representatives outright, and screen anyone who wants to run for the other seats.

Henry Tang, standing committee member of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference, argued to CNBC on Friday that the electoral changes are a step forward for democracy. The CPPCC is China’s top political advisory body.

He was responding to a question on whether Hong Kong has lost some autonomy, with the decreased number of directly elected seats.

“I would say that the democratic progress in Hong Kong has moved one further step forward,” the former Hong Kong chief secretary for administration told “Street Signs Asia” on Friday. “Because first, we have 90 members of the Legislative Council, instead of the previous 70. The composition has changed because we want more diversity and more inclusiveness.”

Tang, who was also the former financial secretary of Hong Kong, explained that the candidates comprise individuals from “many different backgrounds.”
