Much of Asia has largely managed to keep omicron at bay

0

Much of Asia has largely managed to keep omicron at bay even as the variant rages in other parts of the world, but the region that is home to most of the globe’s population is bracing for what may be an inevitable surge.

Strict quarantine rules for arrivals and widespread mask wearing have helped slow the spread of the highly contagious variant in Asia. Countries such as JapanSouth Korea and Thailand quickly reinstated entry and quarantine restrictions in recent weeks after relaxing them in the fall.

But cases are mounting, and experts say the next few months will be critical. Those fears have been amplified by doubts about the effectiveness of the Chinese-made vaccines used in China and much of the developing world.

In India, which has been getting back to normal after a devastating COVID-19 outbreak earlier this year, omicron is once again raising fears, with more than 700 cases reported in the country of nearly 1.4 billion people.

The capital, New Delhi, banned large gatherings for Christmas and New Year’s, and many other states have announced new restrictions, including curfews and vaccination requirements at stores and restaurants.

At the crowded Chandni Chowk market in New Delhi, many people were shopping without masks this week. Cycle rickshaw driver Mahesh Kumar said he is afraid of passengers who don’t wear masks.

Australia is already dealing with multiple COVID-19 surges, with a state leader saying Wednesday that “omicron is moving too quickly.” Elsewhere, Thailand has topped 700 cases, South Korea has more than 500 and Japan, over 300. China, which has some of the strictest virus controls in the world, has reported at least eight.

Only four cases have been reported in the Philippines, where people flocked to shopping malls ahead of Christmas and to Mass in the biggest Roman Catholic nation in Asia. Some hospitals have even begun dismantling COVID-19 wards in a move experts say could prove to be premature.

Japan managed to delay the spread of the new variant for about a month largely thanks to its reimposition of entry restrictions, mandatory COVID-19 tests for all arrivals and the isolation of all passengers on a flight if anyone tested positive for omicron.

How China’s zero-COVID-19 policy will play out at the Olympics is a major question. Athletes and visitors will not be allowed to leave the Olympic zones, and those attending such as officials, journalists and venue staff will be tested every day.

To contain a deadly delta-driven surge in South Korea, the government this month restored its toughest distancing rules with a four-person limit on private gatherings and a 9 p.m. curfew on restaurants.

Health experts predict it’s only a matter of time before omicron comes.

Atlanta Peach Drop will be canceled

According to WSBTV, Peach Drop will be canceled this year. An official announcement is expected some time Tuesday, sources say.

This marks the third year in a row that the Peach Drop has been canceled after it was not held in 2019 and 2020.

The Peach Drop was set to return on December 31 to help ring in 2022 at Underground Atlanta. Performances were scheduled by Atlanta hip-hop group Goodie Mob and Grammy Award winner Ashanti.

For decades, thousands have gathered at Underground Atlanta to watch the Peach Drop. The event was moved for 2017 to Woodruff Park but returned to Underground Atlanta in 2018.

South Korea’s Child births are the lowest since 1981

South Korea is grappling with a chronic decline in childbirths as many young people delay and give up on getting married or having babies amid a prolonged economic slowdown and high housing prices.

The number of babies born in South Korea plunged in October, the lowest tally since 1981, highlighting the country’s bleak demographic situation with the chronically low birth rate, data showed on Wednesday.

A total of 20,736 babies were born in the country in October, down 5.2 per cent from a year earlier, according to the data compiled by Statistics Korea.

The October figure was also down from 21,920 newborns recorded in September.

In the first 10 months of 2021, 224,216 babies were born in the country, down 3.6 per cent from the previous year.

South Korea’s total fertility rate — the average number of children a woman bears in her lifetime — hit a record low of 0.84 last year. It marked the third straight year that the rate was below 1 per cent.

The number of deaths, meanwhile, gained for the eighth consecutive month in October amid rapid population aging.

South Korea posted the first natural decline in population in 2020 as the number of deaths outpaced that of newborns.

CDC cuts the recommended isolation and quarantine periods

“Therefore, people who test positive should isolate for 5 days and, if asymptomatic at that time, they may leave isolation if they can continue to mask for 5 days to minimize the risk of infecting others,” the CDC said in a statement.

People who test positive for the coronavirus need to isolate themselves for only five days if they don’t show symptoms, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said Monday. This cuts in half the earlier recommendation of 10 days of isolation.

Data shows that the majority of coronavirus transmission “occurs early in the course of illness,” the CDC explained — generally in the one or two days before symptoms begin and two or three days after.

The CDC has also updated its recommended quarantine period for people exposed to the virus. It says unvaccinated people should quarantine for five days, followed by five days of “strict mask use.” Exposed people who are more than six months past their second dose of the Pfizer-BioNTech or Moderna vaccines, or two months out from a Johnson & Johnson vaccine, should also quarantine for five days.

People who have gotten their booster shot don’t need to quarantine after exposure but should wear a mask for the next 10 days.

Georgia sees highest COVID-19 positivity rate during the pandemic

Georgia currently has the highest COVID-19 positivity rate than at any other time during the pandemic. The 7-day average positivity rate was 23% Monday, up from 4.7% on Dec. 1.

According to wsbtv, Cases of COVID-19 are currently rising at the highest rate among the unvaccinated. More than 12,504 new cases were reported in unvaccinated people the week of Dec. 18. By comparison, around 5,300 new cases were reported among people who had gotten two shots of the COVID-19 vaccine, and 504 cases were reported among people who have had their booster shots.

The last time the positivity rate was this high was on April 2, 2020, when Gov. Brian Kemp ordered a shelter in place for the state.

On Christmas Day, the Georgia Department of Health reported the second-highest number of new cases since the pandemic began, with 10,044 new cases reported. Jan. 8, 2021 still holds the record for the highest number of cases reported at 10,165.

Only 52.4% of Georgians have been fully vaccinated against the virus.

Georgia could see more than 15,000 daily cases of COVID-19 two weeks from now, according to a COVID-19 case prediction model created by the Mayo Clinic.

Monday’s case total was three times what it was just one week ago and 10 times the 7-day average just a month ago.

Fauci: “vaccine mandate for domestic air travel should be considered”

0

The U.S. currently mandates that most foreign nationals traveling to the U.S. be fully vaccinated against the coronavirus, though citizens and permanent residents only need to show proof of a negative test taken within a day of boarding.

Dr. Anthony Fauci, the top U.S. infectious disease expert, said Monday the nation should consider a vaccination mandate for domestic air travel, signaling a potential embrace of an idea the Biden administration has previously eschewed, as Covid-19 cases spike.

Fauci, President Joe Biden’s chief science adviser on the pandemic response, said such a mandate might drive up the nation’s lagging vaccination rate as well as confer stronger protection on flights, for which federal regulations require all those age 2 and older to wear a mask.

“When you make vaccination a requirement, that’s another incentive to get more people vaccinated,” Fauci told MSNBC. “If you want to do that with domestic flights, I think that’s something that seriously should be considered.”

The Biden administration has thus far balked at imposing a vaccination requirement for domestic air travel. Two officials said Biden’s science advisers have yet to make a formal recommendation for such a requirement to the president.

The officials, who spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss internal deliberations, said a vaccine mandate on planes could trigger a host of logistical and legal concerns.

Kim Kardashian is catching heat from countless social media users after posting spoilers from the megahit new “Spider-Man” movie, “No Way Home.”

The former “Keeping Up With the Kardashians” star, 41, watched the third Marvel blockbuster starring Tom Holland and Zendaya in what appeared to be her home theater on Monday night.

When she got to the end of the film, Kardashian began taking photos of the screen and sharing them to her Instagram Story, revealing to her 273 million followers that former “Spider-Man” actors Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield make surprise appearances alongside Holland, who has been playing Peter Parker’s web-slinging alter ego since 2016’s “Captain America: Civil War.”

The reality star apparently realized her mistake, as she deleted the two posts shortly after uploading them, but it was already too late.

“I don’t even f–king follow Kim kardashian and the one moment I decide to watch her stories on instagram she post literally THEE whole spoiler of spider man,” one furious Twitter user wrote. “I’ve never hated someone so much.”

According to NYPOST, the woman caught on video slapping a passenger aboard a Delta flight last week was revealed as a one-time NFL cheerleader and former small-time actor with a role in “Baywatch.”

Patricia Cornwall, whose stage name is Patty Breton, was charged with assault on Monday for a wild mid-flight tirade that went viral on social media.

A federal criminal complaint filed in Georgia detailed the fracas that erupted on a flight from Tampa, Florida, to Atlanta last Thursday.

Cornwall, according to the affidavit, was trying to return to her seat from the restroom when she asked a flight attendant with a beverage cart that was blocking the aisle for help finding her seat.

The flight attendant asked Cornwall to find a vacant seat until the beverage service was complete.

“What am I, Rosa Parks?” Cornwall snapped back, according to the court docs, garnering the attention of the victim.

The man, who felt Cornwall’s comments were out of line, told her that she “isn’t black … this isn’t Alabama and this isn’t a bus,” according to the affidavit.

U.S. regulators step up investigations into Hyundai-Kia engine fires

0

U.S. auto safety regulators have stepped up a series of investigations into engine fires that have plagued Hyundai and Kia vehicles for more than six years.

Engine failures and fires have dogged the Korean automakers’ vehicles since September 2015 when the company issued an engine failure recall. Since then it has issued at least eight more recalls for a host of engine problems, according to NHTSA documents posted on its website Monday.

The agency says it’s opening the engineering analysis to evaluate whether previous recalls covered enough vehicles. It also will monitor the effectiveness of previous recalls “as well as the long-term viability of related programs and non-safety field actions being conducted by Hyundai and Kia.”

The engineering analysis could lead to further recalls.

Hyundai said on Monday that it is cooperating fully with U.S. regulators.

Meghan King confirmed her split with Cuffe Owens, President Joe Biden’s nephew

“I am rattled. This situation is profoundly devastating. This is obviously not what I imagined when I made my vows – and I’m shocked and saddened by the way things turned out,”

“I am moving forward with my children as we privately process our pain and begin to let go of shattered dreams.”

Former “Real Housewives of Orange County” cast member Meghan King confirmed her split with Cuffe Owens, President Joe Biden’s nephew.

King, 37, took to Instagram Monday to share a comment on the “state of (her) marriage” two months after she said “I do” to the 42-year-old attorney.

She added that she asks for “grace and gentle kindness” as she and her family of three kids “navigate this labyrinth of grief.”

The president and first lady Jill Biden attended his nephew’s wedding in Pennsylvania in October.

At the time of their nuptials, King shared a photo of her and Owens.

The couple went public with their relationship the month prior, when King shared a photo of the two hugging on Instagram on Sept. 25: “Trying my best to avoid any cheesy introductions like ‘my main squeeze’ … so just meet my man,” she captioned the post.
