Atlanta buying 75 acres site to honor people who died as slaves after the Civil War

0

The city of Atlanta is working to buy 75 acres of land to honor those who died while working as slaves after the Civil War.

Historians said that after the Civil War prisoners were used as slaves to rebuild the South. Many of them worked at The Chattahoochee Brick Company in orthwest Atlanta.

City leaders said it’s time to honor them.

Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms said, “We will preserve green space along the Chattahoochee river and create an appropriate memorial to remember.”

Historians said the owner, who went on to become Atlanta’s mayor, used incarcerated men, women and children to make bricks.

Many of those people died under harsh working conditions.

Donna Stephens is with the Chattahoochee Brick Company Descendant’s Coalition. She’s been fighting for the city to buy the 75 acres of land along the Chattahoochee River and Interstate 285.

“I can’t thank them enough, I’m just full of gratitude, and our ancestors are full of gratitude,” Stephens said.

Atlanta Councilman Dustin Hillis said Monday the city council agreed to buy the land and stopped the current owner from putting a railroad yard on the property.

He says they want to use the land for green space, but to also remember what happened here.

Hillis said it will cost the city $10 million to $20 million to buy the land.

‘America’s Got Talent’ star Skilyr Hicks dies at 23

Former “America’s Got Talent” star Skilyr Hicks died on Monday night, her sister confirmed in a Facebook post.

Skilyr Hicks was found dead in a home in Liberty, South Carolina, according to a police report of the incident. She was 23.

The Pickens County Sheriff’s Office wrote in the report that it’s believed the young singer died from a “possible drug overdose.”

The sheriff’s office and coroner’s office said the investigation remains active.

Skilyr Hicks was 14 when she competed on Season 8 of “America’s Got Talent” in 2013. She said she started singing after her father’s death.

“That was a really difficult time for me,” she said during a segment on the show. “Music helped me let out all the emotion that was building up inside of me.”

She was eliminated from the show, which airs on NBC, before the live rounds in New York City.

After her time on the show, Skilyr Hicks was arrested following a domestic violence incident involving her family, according to TMZ. She was later arrested in 2018 for underage drinking.

Demaryius Thomas, former Georgia Tech and NFL star, dies at 33

0

The sports world and communities from Colorado to Georgia were rocked on Thursday night by the news of the death of Demaryius Thomas, a former Georgia Tech and Denver Broncos star who was just 33 years old.

Here’s what we know about Thomas’ sudden passing:

  • Police do not suspect foul play: A family member confirmed to 11Alive’s Denver sister station 9NEWS that he had been found dead at his home in Roswell, north of Atlanta. Roswell Police said so far it appears his death “stems from a medical issue, and our investigators currently have no reason to believe otherwise.”
  • He was just shy of his 34th birthday: Thomas was born in Montrose, Ga. on Christmas Day 1987.
  • No cause is yet determined: A cousin, however, told the Associated Press the family believes he died as a result of a seizure.
  • He was involved in a serious car accident in 2019: It happened in February that year, in Denver, and later that year he said he was “still going through stuff” in relation to it. Despite reports that lingering issues from that wreck contributed to his death, no autopsy has yet been performed and no authorities have confirmed anything about his cause of death.
  • Thomas was a Georgia football legend: He starred at West Laurens High School in Dexter, Ga., before going on to Georgia Tech, where he became a program legend. He was also an accomplished high school basketball and track and field athlete.
  • He had a celebrated NFL career: Thomas starred for the Broncos for eight seasons, making the Pro Bowl four times and winning a Super Bowl ring in 2015. He holds multiple Broncos records, including receiving touchdowns in a season and receiving yards in a single game.
  • He is survived by his mother and grandmother: Both served long prison sentences through Thomas’ formative years on drug charges, which were commuted by former President Barack Obama in 2015 and 2016. Thomas celebrated his family’s freedom by thanking the former president “for everything he’s done for my family, and a lot more families giving them second chances.” He told the Broncos website he was “blindsided” and that “The past two years, I got my grandmother and my mother out. And a lot of other people got their family members out that didn’t do crazy crimes, so it’s a blessing.”

Thomas, a native of Laurens County in central Georgia who later found stardom in Atlanta with the Yellow Jackets and then the NFL, is being mourned by fans and peers and remembered by teammates as someone who was “one of the most powerful and graceful and smooth athletes I’ve ever been around.”

NFL Network’s James Jones said “BayBay,” as friends and teammates referred to Thomas, was “full of personality” and a “great dude, great teammate, loved his family.”

Atlanta rappers Killer Mike, T.I., plans to revive historic Bankhead Seafood

0

Killer Mike and T.I. filed a building permit this week to kickstart plans to rebuild and reopen Bankhead Seafood in northwest Atlanta.

The historic westside restaurant first opened on Donald Lee Hollowell Parkway in 1968 and closed in 2018. Both rappers said they are doing this to invest in the community.

Mike Render, better known as Killer Mike, said the restaurant has been a part of his life for decades.

“It’s been a part of my life as long as I’ve been on earth,” Render said. “If you’re writing a show or a book about Michael Render and his family, (Bankhead Seafood) would definitely be one of the characters.”

Render and T.I. officially purchased the business in 2019, including the name, trademark and recipes.

Render said the hope is for the eatery to “be a fully-functioning” restaurant, complete with a liquor license.

One of popular Atlanta strip club finds a way to virtually entertain

0

According to AJC, Magic City, which opened downtown in 1985, wrote in a social media post last week that it was closing its doors “until further notice.” But the club said this weekend that it will continue to entertain paying customers through its own virtual platform.

Magic City was one of several popular Atlanta strip clubs forced to close over the past week in an attempt to slow the spread of the coronavirus.

Would-be clubgoers can visit magiccitylive.com and pay $20 a month to register and have access to live and pre-recorded video, Daryl Mapp, the director of branding for Magic City, said Sunday. The site is still under construction, but the club plans to have it up and running this week.

Magic City is well known in the hip-hip world as a top venue of its type in Atlanta. It attracts a mix of locals and visitors, as well as artists looking to try out their latest hits.

All of the dancers will be on the platform, Mapp said, and subscribers will be able to tip and sometimes chat directly with them. An Instagram post advertised  “interactive lap dances” and interactive sets — “everything you’d be able to find at Magic City, without being there,” Mapp said.https://bd6dae6267708df614ff169ef1036d71.safeframe.googlesyndication.com/safeframe/1-0-38/html/container.html

The venture allows the club’s dancers and staff to still make money while the club is closed. It will also give people who aren’t able to visit Atlanta a chance to have the Magic City experience, Mapp said.

“We don’t want to leave our people out, without any options,” he said. For those who still want some food from Magic City, the club said on Instagram that the kitchen is staying open with adjusted hours — but there will be no dining in.

Mass entertainment through online platforms like Instagram has caught on since the conoravirus forced millions into isolation at their homes. Saturday night, DJ D-Nice led a party over Instagram Live, with 100,000 people tuning in, including Stacey Abrams, Michelle Obama, Missy Elliott, Joe Biden, Bernie Sanders, Stevie Wonder and other big names. #ClubQuarantine quickly became a top trend on Twitter.

3 ways to grow Georgia digital media industries

0

The media and entertainment industries generate $14.7 billion per year in revenue for Georgia. It includes 40,000 employees and more than 700 local companies, according to a new Technology Association of Georgia report.

The media and entertainment industries, especially in film, television, music and e-sports, show a strong growth trajectory, according to the report. The COVID-19 pandemic caused some slowdowns, but the industries affected are expected to recover and continue to grow.

Georgia’s generous tax credit structure for production companies is often cited as a major reason for the film industry’s growth. Atlanta icon Ted Turner started a legacy of innovation in the broadcast industry with the 24-hour news cycle. The booming startup ecosystem is also advancing new technologies in streaming, video, esports and content.

Complete the film industry ecosystem

Georgia is typically considered a hub for film production, such as using local spots to shoot scenes. It also has infrastructure for the technical work in pre- and post-production. But now the state is starting to see more content developed here, TAG President Larry Williams said.

“We’ve always felt like the missing slice of the pie was the creative side — the scriptwriting or creating the concept,” Williams said.

Attracting the content creators to Georgia makes the local film industry more resilient, Williams said. If people from all aspects of the industry are local — from scriptwriters to funders to production crews — then the industry growth is more likely to be permanent.

Encourage e-sports

Metro Atlanta is considered a hot market for the fast-growing video game and e-sports industry. It is home to well-known game development companies such as Hi-Rez Studios, Blue Mammoth and Scientific Games International.

Skillshot Media is the latest esports company to relocate intown and joins Atlanta Esports Ventures in planning Atlanta gaming headquarters.

E-sports has enjoyed a “meteoric rise with revenues approaching $1 billion worldwide,” according to the TAG report. Atlanta has an opportunity to capture that emerging market, especially if policymakers and academic institutions continue to support that industry.

Georgia already has a tax incentive structure under the Georgia Entertainment Industry Investment Act to attract more gaming development, according to the report. The Georgia High School Association recognizes esports as an office sport, and Georgia State University and Georgia Southern University have e-sports teams.

Increase collaboration

TAG created the media and entertainment report to connect people within the industries, said Louis Gump, co-chair of TAG Media & Entertainment Society.

“There are world-class people doing all sorts of cool things around Atlanta and the state of Georgia,” Gump said. “And many of us don’t know how to find each other.”

The report acts as a guide for the community to foster more collaboration among the different companies. Atlanta’s startup ecosystem is an example of how collaboration could accelerate growth.

The Georgia Institute of Technology’s Tech Square innovation district brings together startups, university resources and corporations. The district in Midtown is the nucleus for Atlanta’s tech growth, which has lured thousands of jobs in the past two years and brought in record amounts of venture capital

Local entertainment and media companies could create similar relationships to strengthen that business community, Gump said.

Many products are in short supply: GA toy suppliers squeezed

0

Now, many shoppers in Georgia and around the nation have likely noticed differences on toy aisles and online this Christmas season. According to AJC, many products are in short supply. And often prices are up.

But for months behind the scenes, local businesses have been scrambling to limit the damage from a discombobulated global network for getting goods to market. The system has gone wrong at virtually every level, stymying manufacturers, marooning finished products at distant ports and leaving some toys far from consumers’ hands as this year’s Christmas clock winds down.

Retailers and toy companies say products are on many shelves amid surging holiday demand. But the cattywampus supply challenges have worsened for some companies as the pandemic grinds on, and recent local spot checks showed some gaps.

Somewhere between China and the U.S. is a cargo ship carrying thousands of Bluetooth speakers shaped like cute little animals.

They are a crucial part of the My Audio Pet inventory that K.J. Robinson agreed to supply to retailers long ago, in time for the holiday shopping season. The ship originally was supposed to arrive by late September. Like so much of the global supply chain, it’s not panning out.

His shipping costs quadrupled, even as delivery times grew longer than ever, but he said he ate the costs rather than increase prices this year.

Robinson limited orders from retailers because he couldn’t guarantee his products would arrive in time for the season. Some of his displays in stores aren’t up at all or aren’t fully stocked.

“It’s frustrating. There is nothing we can do about it,” he said. Sales will be significantly lower this year compared to 2020 or 2019, and the normally profitable company will likely lose money, he said. He laid off two of his five other full-time workers.

Retailers have struggled to keep their shelves full, whether with toys or other products, both in brick-and-mortar stores and online. The biggest players had extra options to avoid shortages. Walmart chartered its own cargo vessels, rerouting them to less-congested ports. Target used its resources to pump up inventories early. Still, several toy shelves in a Gwinnett County Target had empty spaces on a recent visit by an Atlanta Journal-Constitution reporter.

Out-of-stock issues persist onlinefor the industry, with baby and toddler products as well as toys among the hardest hit, according to software giant Adobe. Overall retail out-of-stock messages were up 258% for most of November compared to the same month in 2019 before the pandemic, it found.
